A new state of mind shared by everyone

Sustainable development is a state of mind
|
It is embodied in actions. It covers more than just environmental protection; it is an overall transverse approach.
Implementing the principles of sustainable development is being able to direct your decisions to reach a balance combining environmental preservation, social fairness and economic viability..
« Sustainable Development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs(…) »
Brundtland Rapport, 1987

|
Integrating sustainable development in the company involves :
- Preparing the future
- Motivating the teams
- Promoting innovation
- Protecting your image
- Improving profi tability
Do you know? 82% of French people agree with the following statement: "a product’s production and manufacturing conditions are arguments that I would fi nd persuasive in an advert".

Our pride

Our survival depends on sustainable development
|
The long-term must take priority over the shortterm. Our family structure naturally leads us to make the company’s sustainability the first goal of our efforts.
This means that we have to be able to transmit our values, respect the community, implement a winwin relationship with our partners, customers and suppliers, and use resources sparingly.
 |
|
Our values have a positive impact on our strategic choices by favouring long-term:
- Trust
- Respect
- Integrity
- Work
- Humility
Because our values call for deeds, Schmidt has not been slow to act. Obtaining ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 certifications is triple proof of our commitment in favour of sustainable development.
For all these reasons, we are proud to assert our authentic and responsible status as citizen’s company.
|
Sustainable development: the proof three-fold

|
Certification, a guarantee of responsibility
Obtaining a certification is proof that the company has established an action plan in the area covered by the standard and is making every effort to comply with it.
Most important is the fact that retaining this certification is dependent upon our tangible efforts for sustained improvement. We cannot sit back on our laurels.
Our tangible results
- 2/3 of our waste is recycled
- 3x fewer occupational accidents with respect to the business sector
- Tried and tested carcases with loads 3x greater than average
|
|
An illustration of sustainable development
Quality, environmental preservation and safety at work contribute to the 3 pillars of sustainable development. Each is dependent on the other 2 to ensure the equilibrium of the whole structure. We therefore talk of an Integrated Management System (IMS).
 |
Ecodesign

|
The issues
Humanity is living beyond the means provided by nature. This is the result of our modes of consumption. To stay competitive, companies must learn to produce using less material and generating less of an impact on their environment.
The solution
Ecodesign consists of reducing a product’s impact on the environment throughout its life cycle while retaining its qualities of use.
|
|
Schmidt’s concrete actions
Schmidt has initiated an ecodesign approach:
- Carrying out a study into producing an ecodesigned tray for sink units
- NF Environment labelling on some kitchen ranges (in progress)
In your respective areas, find out about the Schmidt ecodesign operations.
Do you know? It takes 9,000 km of transport to obtain the ingredients for a yoghurt.
|

Eco-responsible logistics

|
Harsh conclusions for transport:
- Non-renewable fossil fuels (petrol and gas) are being exhausted
- Emissions of atmospheric pollutants are harmful for health (Ozone 40%, PM10 30%)
- 20% of greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions come from transport
Do you know? Agence Française de Sécurité Sanitaire Environnementale (the French Agency for Environmental Safety) estimates that atmospheric pollution (ozone and particles) causes 3 to 5 % of deaths among people over 30 years old, an average of about 7000 deaths a year.
|
|
Schmidt's concrete actions
- Modernising its fleet to limit atmospheric pollution
- Training Schmidt’s drivers in eco-driving techniques : 5 to 40 % fuel savings (ADEME, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency)
- Working with transporters to optimise routes and reduce empty return trips for deliveries
- Centralising deliveries on logistics platforms that will reduce urban and inter-urban trips on secondary networks
- Seeking rail-road solutions : pre-shipping containers by rail (80% of the journey)
|
It’s your turn!

Let’s work together
Be creative and help us make Schmidt name that are synonymous with environmental quality and responsibility.
Preserve the environment and reduce your costs by adopting eco-gestures in your store:
Setting heating 1°C lower means savings of 7%.

JI never leave electronic equipment on standby: a computer uses 117W when switched on, 95W on standby.
|
I choose car pooling or cycling to get to work.
|
|
I provide customers and staff with separate bins for paper and plastics.
|
I favour rechargeable and eco-labelled products for office supplies.
|
|
I always use two-sided printing. The new Canon printer presented at Euroforum can help you.
|
Choose the right paper. Estimates and orders have to be printed, butuse a lot of paper.
Opt for printing on recycled paper or paper from sustainably managed forests.
Trust the ecolabels and spotlight your program!
